Finally, Venus and Serena Williams Land in Lagos

History was made again in Lagos on Tuesday as one of the Williams’ sisters and tennis icon, Venus Williams, finally arrived in Lagos, as widely reported in the local and international media.
Venus, the older of the two world's renowned tennis icons, arrived in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital about 3:35pm, aboard a Delta Airline flight. She was welcomed to the hands of officials of Connect Marketing Services Ltd and scores of journalists, who had waited anxiously outside of the arrival lounge of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja.

Her sister, Serena, who has just clinched the WTA title which just ended in Istanbul, Turkey, arrived in Lagos at 9pm local time, on Tuesday.
From the airport, Venus was led straight to a waiting convoy of vehicles and driven to Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island where another group of Journalists had also assembled to receive the tennis queen.
Looking visibly excited about her coming to Lagos, she was accompanied by her managers, who however, did not allow her to entertain any questions from the journalists saying, Venus and Serena will speak to the media elaborately on the purpose of their visit during a Media Conference scheduled to hold on Wednesday 31, October 2012 in Lagos.
Both Serena and Venus Williams are in Lagos as part of the Nigerian leg of a planned tour of two African countries, namely Nigeria and South Africa.
They are here on the platform of Breaking The Mould (BTM) campaign, a women's empowerment programme put together by Octagon and its West Africa affiliate, Connect Marketing Services Ltd.
While in Lagos, they will participate in a number of supporting initiatives such as a tennis clinic, school visit, exhibition match and gala dinner among others.
Through these initiatives, they will be motivating, inspiring and mentoring diverse audiences in particular women and young persons as well as other categories of people to be the best they can be, regardless of obstacles on their way.
Serena and Venus Williams are considered fit as “Mould Breakers” as the story of their lives exemplifies how determination, passion, hard work and self-belief can turn dreams into reality, despite obstacles.

Arsenal tops as most expensive club in Britain

A vast survey has revealed Arsenal as the most expensive club for supporters in Britain for the second year running. The annual Price of Football survey found that a ticket to watch the Gunners in action could cost as much as £126, while the Emirates also boasts the nation’s costliest season ticket, at £1,955.

Even the cheapest season tickets at Arsenal cost £985, which is nearly double the cost of an equivalent at Manchester United (£532) and almost four times as expensive as a pass to watch champions Manchester City (£275).

Newcastle boasted the cheapest match-day tickets at £15, while Wigan’s season tickets were among the least expensive in the entire country.

Wigan’s cheapest season ticket was just £255. It costs more to watch AFC Telford United in the Blue Square Conference who charges a minimum of £266 (although they have more home games).

Overall, the survey found that the average cost of the cheapest ticket to watch a league football match in Britain has risen by more than five times the rate of inflation. Last year the cheapest tickets cost, on average, £19.01, this year the figure is £21.24.

But the money is still rolling in for the big clubs. Arsenal and Man United make more money from gate receipts from every two home games than Wigan FC manages in a season.

AC Milan is not up for sale – Galliani

AC Milan’s director, Adriano Galliani, has insisted that there is no reason to sell the club. This comes in the wake of reports that said the board was considering selling shares to Russian company Gazprom or the Qatar Investment Authority, to alleviate debts. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, were both sold in the summer, sparking speculations that the club would not be able to compete with Europe’s biggest clubs financially.
Berlusconi’s right-hand man, however denied that not even a bad start from the Italian giants will be enough to see him abandon the club.
“I really think fans cannot complain at all,” Galliani told Sky Sport Italia. “I want to remind everyone that the presidency of Berlusconi has delivered 28 trophies in 25 years.
“I repeat what I have already said before – there is no ongoing negotiation that regards the sale of Milan.”
Djokovic cruises into Shanghai final with Berdych defeat
Novak Djokovic got into the Shanghai final gallantly and can now boast of an ATP Tour-leading 69-11 match record for the season as he secured a break in just the second game of the match to take control of the opening set, before taking it for the loss of just three games.
Berdych was always behind in the match, and he was unable to match the world number two in the second set as Djokovic closed it out efficiently to improve his head-to-head record over the Czech to 10-1 while securing his place in the final.
Djokovic will next take on the winner of two-time defending champion Andy Murray’s semi-final clash with world number one Roger Federer in the Shanghai showpiece.

The city of Calabar went agog with celebration as Nigeria’s Super Eagles emerged winner of the much awaited, much talked about and the much strategized game between them and the Lone Stars of Liberia this evening after walloping the Liberians 6-1 in the second leg of the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifiers billed to hold in South Africa.
With this evening’s match outcome, Nigeria has successfully booked its ticket to feature in the finals of the AFCON 2013 with an aggregate of 8-3 after the first leg in Liberia produced a 2-2 draw.
A double from Chelsea new signing Victor Moses sealed victory for the Super eagles while goals from Efe Ambrose, Ahmed Musa, Mikel Obi and Ikechukwu Uche made sure Nigeria held onto the pathway of victory from kick-off.
Bitter memories of the Super Eagles’ dismal performance which denied them the ticket to the last edition of the Nations Cup held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea early this year will be a thing of the past as football pundits can be rest assured that a Super Eagles squad that will produce impressive results has once again emerged as the evening’s game was the first game since Nigeria- Ethiopia match that the Super Eagles were able to produce a swell score line against an opponent.

Welbeck fights back to prove himself as Rooney's perfect England partner

In notching his first and second goals of the new campaign in the Three Lions' 5-0 demolition of San Marino the youngster protrayed the skill and nous to compliment his team-mate

It has been a peculiar start to the season for Danny Welbeck.
After the encouragement of his breakthrough season at Manchester United had culminated in an impressive showing for England at Euro 2012, the 21-year-old suddenly found himself at a crossroads.

Demotion at club level for Welbeck was swiftly followed by demotion from the national team. All through no apparent fault of his own, or tangible downturn in his form.

OH DANNY BOY
PLAYER RATING VS SAN MARINO
Should have opened England's account early on but made amends minutes later when he rounded Simoncini before the San Marino goalkeeper swiped his legs to win a penalty. Scored a goal reminiscent of his strike against Sweden as he back-heel flicked the ball past Simoncini. Added a second goal in the second half as he tapped-in Cleverley's pull-back.
FROM OUR LIVE! COMMENTARY
'72"Just like the first half, Danny Welbeck scores just two minutes after Wayne Rooney does. The ball is played to Tom Cleverley on the right-hand edge of the area and he passes along the byeline for the forward to sneak in at the near post and stab it in for his second. Well worked."
But Welbeck has begun to fight back. By scoring his first goals of the season in his 13th outing for club and country, he has demonstrated that he can still be a match-winner despite the many obstacles blocking his path to a regular starting slot in his favourite centre-forward role for United.
Delivering a man-of-the-match performance against a team ranked 202 places below England in the Fifa rankings may not be the proudest moment of Welbeck’s burgeoning career.
But his display will have been noted not only by Roy Hodgson on the England bench as he weighs up his options for the testing trip to Warsaw to face Poland on Tuesday, but also Sir Alex Ferguson.
After being relegated to the bench for the September World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, Welbeck was given the nod ahead of the in-form Jermain Defoe, who is a booking away from a suspension.
The forward repaid the manager’s faith. Immediately after hitting the post with a left-foot shot as he demonstrated the lack of precision that occasionally lets him down, Welbeck won the penalty that Rooney emphatically converted to break the deadlock and set England on their way.
Two minutes later, Welbeck showed his cute backheel against Sweden at Euro 2012 was no fluke by replicating it with an almost identical flick.
It was a welcome response to critics who claim that he does not have the sophistication to match his pace, work ethic and ingenuity outside the box.
He doubled his account for the match, and the season, after 72 minutes, stabbing in from close range Tom Cleverley’s cross from the byline.
Any praise for Welbeck must be tempered by the direness of the opposition but there was evidence of the weapons that make him a far more rounded tip of England’s offensive blade than the likes of Defoe and Andy Carroll.
The trip to Poland will require a centre-forward who can relieve the pressure on the rest of the team when they manoeuvre the ball upfield.
Playing with his back to goal and bringing others into play have never been Defoe’s greatest strengths, while Carroll does not possess the speed or ingenuity to thrive on the counter-attack.
If you were to pin Rooney down, he would most likely admit that Welbeck would be his preferred partner in Warsaw in Hodgson’s favoured split-striker system. The manager must make it happen.

Marco Reus
Germany forward Marco Reus was delighted with his side's performance in the 6-1 win over Republic of Ireland on Friday, and warned rivals that they are not satisfied yet.

"We have big plans," he is quoted as saying by Sportschau.
"The coach prepared us very well. We were in control of the match from the beginning, but unfortunately chances were not forthcoming."In the first half, it was certainly a penalty. There's no two ways about it."
Marcel Schmelzer put in a far better showing for his country after a disastrous performance against Austria a month ago, but was adamant that he did not let words of criticism affect him.
"I was pleased with Reus' leadership, but the whole team supported me well. I will say nothing about the criticism before the game, but I'm happy about getting all three points here in Ireland."If I didn't have so much support, I couldn't have concentrated on the game properly."Bastian Schweinsteiger, meanwhile, saluted his defensive colleagues for dealing with Ireland's aerial game, and believes his side are on their way to another major tournament."We put in a very focused performance. I think everyone did a fine job. For the defence, it wasn't easy to deal with the long balls.
