President Goodluck Jonathan has set up a committee to review the alleged
marginalisation of some geo-political zones in political appointments. The
Commissioner representing Ekiti State at the Federal Character Commission, Dr.
Dele Afolabi, said this in an interview with journalists in Ado-Ekiti on
Thursday. The FCC commissioner spoke after the inauguration of the new office
of the commission on New Iyin Road in Ado-Ekiti.There has been outcry,
especially from leaders of the South-West about perceived marginalisation of the
zone in the distribution of appointments by the Jonathan administration.Afolabi
said, “Let me tell you this, Mr. President recently set up a committee to
examine the veracity or otherwise of this marginalisation thing. You
journalists drew the attention of everybody to it and Mr. Preisdent has taken
steps to address it.“Mr. President, being a listening leader, will address this
when the report of the committee is out.”
The FCC commissioner, who said the commission had done a lot to correct
lopsidedness in employment distribution among the federating units, said zones
which were “over represented had started shedding weight while those, which were
under-represented, were being given opportunities to increase their
representation.”Afolabi, who thanked Governor Kayode Fayemi for his assistance
to the commission, appealed to the governor to rehabilitate the road in front
of the commission.Fayemi, represented by the Secretary to the State Government,
Dr. Ganiyu Owolabi, advised federal establishments in the state to stop looking
towards the state government alone to sponsor their activities.
He urged them to be more creative in sourcing financial assistance.
