Just
like every other developing country with different challenges, the
Federal Government of Nigeria through its minister for education, Mr.
Nyesom Wike has revealed that in a recent report over 11 million
children of school age are roaming the streets. It was said that about
nine million are children of beggars, fishermen and other less
privileged parents. The Minister maintained that the high increase of street children poses a great threat to the security of the nation.
Nysom made this known in Benin, following the direction of President
Goodluck Jonathan to have a special school established in the South-East
and South-South region mainly to cater for the educational needs of
such kids from disadvantaged home.
According to the minister, his journey to Edo State capital was to
seek partnership with the state government in providing the needed land
for the execution of the huge project.
He also maintained that the establishment of Basic Education is one of
the primary duties of the states and local government councils, but
because of the importance which the Federal Government has attached to
the educational sector for the sake of these street children, he had
decided to combine the joint efforts of states and local government
councils in the accomplishment of the set goals.
